The Miocene Arrow
Author:
Sean McMullen
Well... it took me a long time to read the first half and I would have given up but I couldn't find anything else to read. But somewhere around the middle of the book I started to enjoy it, a little. It's a weird book. I wouldn't call it good.
The Cold Moon
Author:
Jeffery Deaver
Uh, it's like the bone collector - same characters. The ending was good. It would probably make a good movie, but if they decide to make it a movie, they'll probably screw it up.
The Far Call
Author:
Gordon R. Dickson
You know, when you read a Sci-Fi novel written in the early 70's, you have to expect flying cars and video phones. But you'd think the concept of a mobile phone might have crossed the authors mind. It's hard to read, the science is so old. And it's boring.
The Falls
Author:
Ian Rankin
I hate detective novels, though this may only be the second one I've ever read all the way through. it's ok, I guess. The ending is a let down. Probably good if you like detective novels.
Contest
Author:
Matthew Reilly
B-movie script attempt if I ever read one. The summary on the cover makes it sound good, but really, don't waste your time. It's not only rediculous, it's juvenile.
Only Forward
Author:
Michael Marshall Smith
Very strange book. Bizarre. If you read the end first, you'd probably toss the book aside without reading the rest, but somehow the first half justifies the crazy second half. It made me say 'I never thought of it like that' a half a dozen times.
Popcorn
Author:
Ben Elton
I didn't like it as much as Stark - it's not quite as clever somehow. It doesn't make the statement it's intended to, in my opinion anyway. But it's ok.
Divorcing Jack
Author:
Colin Bateman
Apparently, it's a movie. I almost think the movie could be better than the book in this case. It's a comedy, and it's a bit funny. I'm a little stupid about Ireland and the IRA and the CIA and so on, so some of it didn't make sense. Easy read, good ending
Kolymsky Heights
Author:
Lionel Davidson
Uh, ok, if you like Siberian spy novels. It was very descriptive which was sometimes good, but other times it dragged a bit. Not the best of endings.
Fall On Your Knees
Author:
Ann-Marie Mac Donald
The first of Oprah's Book Club I've ever read all the way through. I liked it. Ingeniously written and rather easy to follow considering it has a rather cryptic feel. The story itself isn't what I'd call original or fascinating, but a good read nonetheless
Teranesia
Author:
Greg Egan
Starts out great - gets way to technical somewhere in the middle (I did took a few biology courses but certainly can't remember much about adenine, guaninge, cytosine and thymine) and the ending is a let down.
Trapped
Author:
James Alan Gardner
I really liked the writing style, the story is just so, so. The book contains some neat ideas on psychic capablilities (a scientific explanation that fits nicely with mythology). The ending is a bit of a let down.
Haunted Mesa
Author:
Louis L’Amour
Did the question marks drive me crazy? How could they not? How many times can a character ask himself the same question? How many times can he restate the facts? Why does the character not see the huge mistakes in the plot line? Why did I keep reading?
Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing
Author:
Patrick F. McManus
I paid one Singapore dollar for this book (Less than $1 CAD) at the University shop and picked it over all the other books because it was in English and wasn't a computer programming textbook. This book was surprisingly good. Short stories, quite humorous.
Jarhead
Author:
Anthony Swofford
This book is an honest account of one marine’s experiences during the gulf war. I believe it’s honest because what he describes isn’t really extraordinary. There isn’t much blood, and he didn’t experience much in the way of combat. Good read.
Moving Mars
Author:
Greg Bear
Not the first Greg Bear book I've read, so when I saw it on the shelves, I knew there was a good chance I'd like it. A little slow at first, but it is a really neat book. It's a fictional memoir written by someone 150 years in the future.
Not So Funny When It Happened
Author:
Edited by Tim Cahill - Various Authors (Including Bill Bryson)
A funny collection of travel tales by various authors. Some of the stories are very funny. I brought it with me and read it on the plane. It was a Christmas gift; thanks Tina, I really enjoyed it (Richard is reading it now).
Perfume
Author:
Patrick Suskind
It’s interesting to read a book so wholly devoted to the sense of smell. I kind of wish I’d lost the book before reading the last three chapters which really spoiled an otherwise fabulous book.
Rainbow Mars
Author:
Larry Niven
It’s been a while since our last update. There was no internet at the farm and we didn’t have a lot of time to make a trip into town to an internet shop. But we’ve just arrived in Luang Prabang where internet is available everywhere, so we’ll have lots for
Rule of Four
Author:
Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason
This book is a lot like The DaVinci Code, but focuses on characters in a believable setting – not quite the car chasing, guns a blazing thriller that was practically written for Hollywood. Unfortunately, fact meets fiction in a messy way.
The Fountainhead
Author:
Ayn Rand
One of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s a more straightforward read than Atlas Shrugged; with a slightly different, easier to swallow message – not so aggressively preached. A really great story with fantastic characters. Thought provoking. inspiring.
The Reef
Author:
Di Morriston
I was very disappointed with this book. I was expecting a bit of marine science and a slowly unraveling mystery, but most of the interesting bits are mentioned briefly and the big mystery has a boring solution. The book is really about the life changes of
The Testament
Author:
John Grisham
Good book, Richard liked it too. It was interesting to read while traveling in the tropics. We acquired this book by trade in the Perhentian Islands (lots of good books on the shelves there).
This Day All Gods Die
Author:
Stephen Donaldson
The Gap Into Ruin, Volume 5 - Seems to be written for people who forgot volumes 1 through 4 (and for people like me who didn't read them) Acquired by trade; I Picked the only English book on the shelf that wasn't a romance novel. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
